Morgan Sindall Infrastructure Energy is seeking an exceptional Engineering Manager - Plant & Equipment to lead the future development, performance and innovation of plant and equipment across our national Energy portfolio, supporting major frameworks with National Grid, GGP, SSEN and SPEN.

This is a newly created leadership role with a unique opportunity to shape how plant and equipment is selected, developed, deployed and continuously improved across one of the UK's largest energy infrastructure delivery businesses.

Working at the interface between Engineering, Operations and Magnor Plant, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure's in-house plant and transport business, you will drive engineering excellence, innovation and standardisation while ensuring plant solutions remain safe, efficient, productive and fit for the future.

You will lead the development of new plant strategies, influence investment decisions, improve operational performance and champion innovative engineering solutions that enhance productivity, reduce risk and support the delivery of critical energy infrastructure projects.

As the technical leader for plant and equipment engineering, you will play a central role in transforming the way we design and deploy plant assets across the business.

About the Role

As Engineering Manager - Plant & Equipment, you will provide strategic engineering leadership for plant and equipment used across Morgan Sindall Infrastructure Energy's transmission and distribution operations.

You will work closely with Magnor Plant, operational delivery teams, engineering leaders and supply chain partners to develop and implement a long-term plant strategy that improves safety, productivity, sustainability and efficiency.

The role combines engineering leadership, innovation, technical governance and operational improvement, ensuring the business continues to develop industry-leading solutions that support successful project delivery.

You will be responsible for identifying opportunities to enhance plant performance, introducing emerging technologies, standardising equipment solutions and embedding lessons learned across the organisation.

Engineering Leadership & Plant Strategy

Develop and lead the Plant & Equipment Engineering Strategy for the Energy business.

Define future plant capability requirements to support business growth and operational delivery.

Build a strong collaborative partnership with Magnor Plant to optimise plant performance and asset utilisation.

Provide technical leadership for plant selection, specification and deployment to ensure fit for purpose.

Develop standard engineering solutions that can be scaled across multiple projects and frameworks.

Act as the senior engineering focal point for plant and equipment matters across the business.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

Lead innovation programmes focused on improving safety, productivity and quality.

Identify, trial and implement new technologies, equipment and modern methods of construction.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives based on operational performance data and lessons learned.

Champion innovation opportunities arising from project teams, suppliers and Magnor Plant.

Develop future-focused engineering solutions that support the Energy business strategy.

Promote digital technologies, automation and smarter ways of working.

Incident Prevention & Operational Excellence

Lead investigations into plant-related incidents and near misses.

Conduct root cause analysis and implement effective corrective actions.

Embed organisational learning into standards, procedures and equipment specifications.

Champion a culture of verification, compliance and proactive risk management.

Support major projects in selecting plant solutions that maximise productivity and minimise risk.

Share best practice and standardise successful solutions across the Energy business.

Engineering Governance & Technical Assurance

Ensure appropriate engineering standards, governance and controls are maintained across plant operations.

Lead technical reviews of plant specifications, modifications and engineering solutions.

Maintain a culture of engineering integrity, accountability and continual improvement.

Supply Chain & Stakeholder Engagement

Develop strong relationships with Magnor Plant, suppliers and equipment manufacturers.

Influence equipment development and product improvement with strategic supply chain partners.

Support procurement activities through technical evaluation and specification development.

Collaborate across Engineering, Operations, HSEQ and Commercial functions.

Represent the business in discussions relating to plant innovation and industry best practice.

About You

You are a forward-thinking engineering leader who combines technical expertise with a passion for innovation, improvement and operational excellence.

You enjoy solving complex engineering challenges, influencing stakeholders and driving positive change. Most importantly, you recognise that world-class plant and equipment solutions can transform both safety and productivity.

You are equally comfortable developing long-term engineering strategy, engaging with senior leaders, collaborating with operational teams and working directly with suppliers to develop innovative solutions.

Essential Requirements

Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

Significant experience in engineering leadership roles within utilities, energy, infrastructure or construction.

Strong understanding of plant and equipment used in major infrastructure delivery environments.

Experience leading engineering improvement, innovation or asset performance programmes.

Knowledge of plant engineering, lifting operations and equipment management.

Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.

Experience working across complex supply chains and operational environments.

Proven ability to deliver sustainable business improvement and engineering change.

Strong understanding of engineering governance and risk management principles.

Desirable

Experience within Overhead Line (OHL) delivery environments.

Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.

Experience leading innovation, product development or plant improvement programmes.

Knowledge of modern methods of construction (MMC).

About the Energy Business Unit

We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.

Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying, and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair, and refurbishment services.

Key Qualifications & Candidate Profile

  • Relevant technical qualifications in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven track record operating on UK construction sites or major infrastructure frameworks.
  • Knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental standards (CDM regulations, CSCS, IOSH/NEBOSH).
  • Strong communication, team coordination, and problem-solving abilities.

Compensation & Benefits Guidance

Estimated Remuneration: GBP £45,000 - £65,000 per annum (competitive market rate commensurate with experience)
