We are looking for a motivated and ambitious Project Engineer (Overhead Lines) to join our team on the National Grid Framework, supporting the delivery of a range of exciting and nationally significant electricity transmission schemes. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is keen to further develop their technical expertise and take on increasing levels of responsibility within a growing and successful delivery team.

As a Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of overhead line transmission projects ranging from 132kV to 400kV. Working closely with project managers, construction teams, designers, subcontractors, and client representatives, you will provide technical engineering support throughout the project lifecycle, helping to deliver critical infrastructure that supports the UK's energy transition.

Role Responsibilities

Support the planning, coordination, and delivery of overhead line (132kV to 400kV) construction activities.

Provide technical guidance on installation methods, buildability, and engineering solutions.

Assist with the procurement of plant, equipment and specialist resources required for project delivery.

Ensure all works are delivered safely and in accordance with approved RAMS, company procedures, and client requirements.

Coordinate and review subcontractor activities, documentation, and safe systems of work.

Monitor programme progress and support the achievement of quality, cost, and delivery objectives.

Assist with electrical safety coordination and implementation of site safety controls.

Produce and maintain project documentation, including completion records and Operation & Maintenance manuals.

Support quality inspections, defect management, and project close-out activities.

Promote a positive safety culture and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the business.

Work collaboratively with project teams, designers, clients, and subcontractors to achieve successful project outcomes.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

HNC or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline.

Experience delivering overhead line (OHL) transmission projects, ideally within the 132kV to 400kV network.

Previous experience in a Project Engineer, Wiring Engineer, or similar engineering role within the power transmission sector.

Experience working on live and/or dead electrical systems and associated construction activities.

Good understanding of overhead line installation techniques, construction methodologies, and industry standards.

Experience supporting the planning, coordination and delivery of construction works, including subcontractor management.

Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements, including the preparation and implementation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Experience working on National Grid projects or frameworks.

Knowledge of electrical safety rules and transmission network operational requirements.

Working towards or holding professional membership with a recognised engineering institution.

Understanding of quality management processes and project documentation requirements within the power transmission sector.

We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.

Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying, and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair, and refurbishment services.

Key Qualifications & Candidate Profile

  • Relevant technical qualifications in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven track record operating on UK construction sites or major infrastructure frameworks.
  • Knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental standards (CDM regulations, CSCS, IOSH/NEBOSH).
  • Strong communication, team coordination, and problem-solving abilities.

Compensation & Benefits Guidance

Estimated Remuneration: GBP £45,000 - £65,000 per annum (competitive market rate commensurate with experience)
